The Department of Physical Therapy at New York University (NYU) Steinhardt offers programs that lead to the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), MA degree in pathokinesiology, and DPT for practicing therapists. There is also a clinical residency program in orthopedic physical therapy. The DPT program prepares entry-level students for advanced clinical practice in developing fields of PT. PT students learn how to prevent injury, impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities and maintain and promote fitness, health, and quality of life. Entry-level program requirements include completion of 133 credits of course work.

The NYU Medical Center is a nationally renowned center for health care that affords many opportunities for students to gain clinical experience and participate in research with health care professionals. The Arthur J. Nelson Jr. Human Performance Laboratory supports computerized motion analysis systems, force plate studies, electromyography, electrogoniometry, isokinetic dynamometry, and force transducers studies. Computer applications include LabVIEW, Visual BASIC, C, GAITRite, and F-SCAN. Other PT facilities include the Motor Control and Behavior Lab, Pulmonary Function Lab, and VA Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center.
