The MA in Counseling and Guidance at New York University (NYU) Steinhardt prepares students interested in working as school (guidance) counselors in grades K-12. Graduates are eligible to take the national exams to become national certified counselors and move on to positions in elementary, middle, junior high, and senior high schools. Additionally, there is a specialization in bilingual school counseling for grades K-12. Graduates have been successful in obtaining positions as School Guidance Counselors through the New York City Department of Education and within school systems throughout the tri state area. In addition, many have obtained positions in agencies that provide services to youngsters.
Highlights
Study multiethnic, multicultural issues and problems that characterize New York City and other urban environments Focus on procedures and techniques for fostering healthy development in school-age children and their families. Students learn to understand children in socio-historical contexts, including but not limited to gender, race/ethnicity, class, and sexual orientation Complete an 8-credit, year-long (400 hours) supervised internship Prepare to sit for the National Certified Counselor (NCC) exam. Students obtain initial certification by the State of New York upon graduation. After completing two-years of post-masters employment, graduates can attain professional certification

The Department of Applied Psychology houses four main centers: (1) the Child and Family Policy Center; (2) the Center for Health, Identity, Behavior, and Prevention Studies; (3) the Center for Research on Culture, Development, and Education; and (4) the Institute for Human Development and Social Change. In addition, the department's computer and measurement laboratories are multipurpose resources for student and faculty use. The measurement laboratory houses a collection of educational and psychological tests and reference books containing critical reviews of tests. Also housed in the laboratory are reference books on measurement, research, and statistics.
